Life is what happens when you are
waiting for something else. I’ve gotten
some of my best ideas for things I’m writing while I’m waiting in a doctor’s
office or some other “waiting” room. In
writing for students in World War II C. S. Lewis pointed out that if they waited
for this or that event in the crisis time of war to happen they were making a
mistake. There is always going to be a
crisis of one kind or another, and while you’re waiting life keeps rolling
along.
We tend to look on the trials and
troubles of our current age as something new and specific only to us, but that
is an illusion. The distress of any age
is not peculiar to that age, but all of us alike wrestle with pretty much the
same thing. Anywhere you delve in
history you will find times of difficulty and violence.
Some people want to wait for the crisis
to pass, or for this event, or that to happen, and instead of living, and life
just passes them by.
